Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced the film to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread the cause of activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific Jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Besides PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
